Benefits of Joining a Weight Loss Group
Starting a weight loss journey alone can be a daunting thought and can become overwhelming quickly. Fortunately, our in-person Re-Shape programme has been designed to create a supportive environment to give members the confidence and tools to achieve sustainable long-term weight loss.
Several recent studies have shown that when it comes to losing weight, going through the journey with like-minded individuals can lead to greater weight loss. One published study showed that those attending a group session lost on average 2kg more weight and were more likely to lose at least 5% of their body weight. (S. Abbott, 2020)
5% is a significant figure with weight loss as it can have benefits, such as reducing your risk of developing diabetes or lowering your blood pressure. Losing 5% of your weight means losing 5 kg if you weigh 100 kg, or 11 pounds if you weigh 16 stone. (NICE, 2023)
Some benefits of joining a weight loss group include:
Group Support: Being able to share your success and failures with other members of the group who will be able to understand what you’re going through can provide reassurance. Along with your Re-Shape coach they will become a strong support network for you to lean on and empower you to create new habits helping to guide you to your goals.
Accountability: To create long lasting change, new habits are formed over several weeks. Attending a weekly session is often a motivating factor to not give up and stick to your plan despite possible challenges.
Practical Solutions: Throughout your time on the Re-Shape programme your weight management advisor will be able to provide you with all the advice that you need to make change. However, doing it within a group also allows for others to share past experiences, pass on tips and advice that you may be able to implement to your own situations.
